København

Last week my girlfriend and I went on quick citytrip to Copenhagen – Denmark’s capital. Most people know it for its Scandinavian design, throughout these pictures you’ll see that Copenhagen is much more than this.

PHOTO ASSIGNMENTS – #2 LOW ANGLE PHOTOGRAPHY

It’s time to reveal my pictures for the second photo assignment by Ted Forbes, you can find his video explaining this assignment in detail here.

For this assignment I went to C-Mine in Genk. This is a wonderful place to experience the Limburgish mining heritage. More recently Gijs Van Vaerenbergh – 2 Belgian architects – built an amazing piece of architectural art called “Labyrint” – which (obviously) means “labyrinth” in Dutch. I decided to combine these two elements to create something almost surreal.

The following pictures have nothing to do with the assignment but I do quite like them so here they are.

And finally, a picture of me trying to find my way out of this labyrinth…

Photo Assignments – #1 Variations

Today I went to Hasselt to find a subject to photograph for the first real assignment – “Variations”. The goal of this exercise is to choose one subject and to make 10 exposures. This is easier said than done, after a few shots I started struggling, I couldn’t come up with new ways to photograph the same subject. This is exactly what the challenge is all about, challenging you to experiment and getting you out of your comfort zone. After all I think I came up with some interesting angles the cover Hasselt’s court of law.

Photo Assignments

A few days ago I stumbled upon the “The Art of Photography” channel on youtube. This is where I found a video on photo assignments. Ted Forbes (the guy behind this channel) states that the only way to improve your photography is to push yourself by challenging your skills. A few months ago he introduced photo assignments to his channel and I’ve decided to follow along.

In his introductory video for the assignments he also gives the first assignments, “Something you Love”. I’ve picked my dog – Maurice the french bulldog – as my subject. Ted also instructs to keep a photographer’s sketchbook. This is a book in which you’ll put all your pictures and it’s a way to be able to draw on your photos and comment on them.

Here’s the result of the initial assignment.

Are you a photographer?

It seems like everyone is calling himself a photographer these days. This got me wondering if this really is true.

What is a photographer?

The first question we should ask ourselves is: “What is it that makes you a photographer?”. The answer to this is pretty simple, we can split up the word in two parts. First of we have “photo” which is directly derived from the Greek word “φῶς” (phos), which means “light”. Secondly we have “grapher”, which is derived from the Greek word “γραφή” (graphê), meaning “drawing”. This would mean that anyone who is “drawing with light” is a photographer.

Controversy.

Let’s use an analogy here. Let’s say you buy a guitar and start practicing, does this make you a guitarist? Or better, when do you start to call yourself a “guitarist”? Maybe never, even after years of practicing and becoming pretty good at it.

This is where the controversy comes in. This is why some people would argue that you should only call yourself a photographer if it is something you’re doing to earn money and not just as a hobby like playing the guitar.

Call yourself what you want to be!

It’s all about the mindset. You can call yourself whatever you want to be. It is proven that calling yourself what you want to be has positive effect on your own abilities. If you don’t believe that you are a photographer, how would anyone else believe you are?

If you want to start earning money by taking pictures you’ll probably have to call yourself a photographer because that’s what people will search for if they need pictures taken. This is another reason to call yourself one.

But after all it is all about you, do what you feel best about and don’t let others take you down!

Amsterdam

Last week my girlfriend and I went on a trip to Amsterdam for her birthday. Since  it was meant to be about her birthday and not about photography I decided to only bring my Fujifilm x100s, I knew that this would really limit me but after all it was a great experience.

Since I really hadn’t planned anything photography related I just took pictures while we roamed around in this beautiful city. I just wanted to capture the atmosphere and document our trip.
